Diving into the WSU Beach Watcher Program!

This week, I officially started my journey as a WSU Beach Watcher, and I couldn’t be more excited! I’ve already completed three classes, and in just a few days, I’ve learned so much about how our ecosystems are interconnected—from forests to the Puget Sound. I can already tell this program is going to be an incredible experience, and I’m stoked to keep going!

What I’ve Learned So Far

One of the biggest takeaways from this week has been just how deeply forestry, stormwater pollution, and even pet waste impact the health of our waters. Here are a few key things that stood out:

🌲 Forests & Ecosystems – Snohomish County’s forests play a massive role in protecting our waterways. Trees help filter water, reduce erosion, and provide habitats that support a variety of wildlife. When forests are damaged or removed, it has a ripple effect that reaches all the way to the Puget Sound.

💧 Stormwater Pollution – Rainwater doesn’t just disappear—it picks up everything in its path, including oil, chemicals, and debris, and carries it into streams, rivers, and eventually the Sound. Stormwater runoff is one of the biggest threats to water quality, and reducing pollution at the source (like limiting pesticide use and properly disposing of waste) is key.

💩 The Pet Poop Problem – This one really stuck with me. Pet waste left on the ground doesn’t just disappear—it washes into storm drains and waterways, introducing harmful bacteria that can make both wildlife and people sick. So yes, picking up after your dog isn’t just about being a responsible pet owner—it’s about protecting the environment too!

What’s Coming Up Next?

Today, I’ll be diving into marine fauna with experts from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, where we’ll learn about local fish species, salmon populations, and their role in the ecosystem. Then, we’re heading to the Stream Center on Thursday for some hands-on learning!

I can already tell this program is going to be full of eye-opening experiences, and I’m beyond excited to keep sharing what I learn here on The Kelp Chronicles! Stay tuned for more updates as I continue my journey as a Beach Watcher! 🌊💙
